Duravit has highlighted the role thoughtful bathroom design can play in supporting everyday wellbeing, exploring how form, materials, lighting and colour can influence the way bathrooms are experienced. As the bathroom continues to evolve beyond a purely functional space, the manufacturer believes carefully considered design can help create interiors that feel calm, balanced and restorative.

Drawing on the design philosophies behind collections created in collaboration with Philippe Starck, Christian Werner, Sebastian Herkner and Antonio Citterio, Duravit explores how considered design choices can contribute to more harmonious bathroom environments.

The bathroom is one of the few places where people can enjoy uninterrupted time alone. As the space where the day begins and ends, its design plays an important role in shaping everyday routines and the overall user experience. Even simple rituals, such as a morning shower or evening wind-down, can feel markedly different when the surrounding environment has been carefully considered.

Forms & materials

Soft radii, clean lines and carefully coordinated materials and colours create a cohesive overall aesthetic. Many contemporary bathroom collections embrace these principles, using organic forms, matt textures and warm tones to establish a calm and welcoming atmosphere.

Designers including Philippe Starck, Christian Werner and Sebastian Herkner employ a restrained design language, combining refined detailing with balanced proportions to create timeless bathroom environments.

Light & colour

Lighting also plays an important role in how a bathroom is experienced. Bright, focused illumination around the wash area can promote alertness, while indirect lighting creates a softer, more relaxed atmosphere.

Colour further reinforces this effect. Warm beige and wood tones introduce a sense of comfort, while green shades help evoke calm. Lighter finishes can make rooms feel larger and more open, while darker furniture and accent surfaces provide visual contrast and create defined focal points within the space.

The bathroom in everyday life

The bathroom serves as both a place of retreat and one of the most frequently used rooms in the home, making thoughtful design increasingly important. Clearly organised layouts and integrated storage create a sense of order, helping everyday routines feel simpler and more intuitive.

This is particularly evident in the wash area, where repeated daily rituals benefit from an environment that is uncluttered, functional and visually calm.

A new approach to bathroom design

For Duravit, contemporary bathroom design is increasingly focused on combining clean forms, balanced proportions and practical functionality to create spaces that are both aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. The manufacturer’s collections demonstrate how considered design and everyday practicality can be brought together to create cohesive bathroom solutions that are visually striking while promoting a sense of calm and harmony.

The focus is shifting in contemporary bathroom architecture: atmosphere, material quality, and a harmonious overall concept are gaining the edge on pure function. The bathroom is becoming part of the architecture of the home – intentionally open, artfully staged, and meticulously designed. The Duravit Artisan Lines ranges are a perfect fit for this philosophy. They fuse comfort, functionality, and aesthetics to create a distinctive and expressive spatial concept.

The floor plan: space to make an impact A statement bathroom commences with the room and the floor plan becomes a stage: with open transitions, floor-to-ceiling structures, and asymmetric lines instead of a conventional room subdivision. Fluid transitions reveal zones for washing, bathing, and relaxation. Large areas create showcasing opportunities; elements such as freestanding bathtubs, frameless showers, or integrated washbasins set clean accents. At the same time, elegant solutions combining both individuality and functionality can be created in a small space, using for instance niches or plinths.

The colours: courage to be yourself

Colours influence the atmosphere of any room – including the bathroom. Creating moods, setting accents, and adding character. Whether bold and expressive or calm and minimalist: every nuance tells its own story. Tone-in-tone concepts generate harmonious depth, while targeted contrasts introduce tension and dynamism. This transforms the colour scheme into a personal expression.

Decoration: expressive details

Materials, light, and accessories complete the design concept. Textured surfaces, coloured faucets, or sculptural objects create intentional accents. Elements including natural stone, pigmented plaster, or matt metal add visual and tactile depth. Combined with plants, candles, or small design objects, the resulting bathroom not only hits all functional notes, but acts as an expression of an individual lifestyle.

The Zencha bathroom collection by Sebastian Herkner was inspired by traditional Japanese rituals and combines above-counter basins with minimalistic furniture. The collection also includes a bathtub and mirror and can be combined with toilets from a range of Duravit lines.

Modular bathroom furniture

The modular Zencha furniture collection has the flexibility to be organised as open shelving or drawers with easy to operate open and self-close technology. Combined with an above-counter basin, they create a beautiful centrepiece in the bathroom.

As a storage area for everyday items, Zencha offers structure to the room and creates a feeling of calm. The furniture frame comes with an easy-to-clean surface and anti-fingerprint effect and is available in the subtle colours White Super Matt, Taupe Super Matt, and Graphite Super Matt.

The cabinet fronts add a playful element and are offered in a range of variants. While the options in Natural Oak and Oak Black produce a warm and tactile effect, white plate or black textured glass introduces a degree of sensual elegance into the bathroom.

“I’ve always wanted to develop a bathroom series for Duravit,” said the designer from Offenbach.

Above-counter basins

The above-counter basins are made from DuraCeram® and consist of two differently shaped above-counter basins: a curved square measuring 420 x 420 mm and a rounded rectangle measuring 550 x 390 mm – with or without a tap panel – in White, White Satin Matt, Gray Satin Matt, and Anthracite Matt.

The square variant of the above-counter basin with its ceramic cover is a particular talking point in the bathroom and is covered by Duravit’s lifetime warranty. It can be combined with toilets from a range of Duravit lines.

Bathtub

The free-standing bathtub is made from DuraSolid® and measures 1250 x 1250 mm. Bathers are invited to immerse themselves into the deep water, an experience reminiscent of a Japanese Onsen bath. The bathtub is available in two compact versions measuring 1600 x 850 mm and 1800 x 900 mm, optionally with the air whirl system integrated into the base for a gentle massage effect.
