On Sunday 15th November at 7pm, PuraVida the latest mixer collection to be launched by Hansgrohe made a special extra-terrestrial appearance alongside David Tennant in the television hit TV series Doctor Who. Set in a space station on Mars, the dual white and chrome PuraVida basin mixer appears in a bio-dome surrounded by plants, flowers, vegetables and birds. Watched by over 9 million viewers, the mixer tap acts as a focal point for the source of water which is the main theme for the show entitled 'The Waters of Mars'.
Hansgrohe were approached by retail customer Taylors Etc, Ltd. in early 2009 after they were contacted by a member of the BBC production team in Cardiff. The brief was to seek out new bathroom products with stylish and futuristic design in order to suit the Doctor Who episode featuring David Tennant which was set in the year 2059.
The PuraVida working mixer in lacquered white and shiny chrome supplied for the show was sourced specially from Hansgrohe in Germany prior to the range going into full production. The chrome-only version of the basin, bidet and shower mixers has been available throughout the second half of 2009 and the dual colour version will be available here on Earth from early 2010.
Created in collaboration with the renowned studio of Phoenix Design, PuraVida represents a lively new and flowing design language and offers a co-ordinating range of mixers, showers, thermostatic controls and accessories. The mixer has no aggressive corners or sharp edges, instead pleasantly round, soothing shapes radiate comfort and safety, and invite the observer to touch them. The spray former disappears into the underside of the spout, giving the impression that the water appears to come from nowhere, flowing into the basin as a calm and clear laminar jet simply picking up on the overall pure appearance. The jet angle can easily be adapted by just moving it with the finger to the respective basin shape.
Thanks to a new manufacturing technique, the lacquered white and shiny chrome surfaces merge seamlessly, representing a sign of high-quality perfection. The colour white is consciously used for the whole PuraVida range as an image conveying purity, lightness and beauty. Furthermore, white also stands for independence, honesty and courage when it comes to well-rounded designs, because white does not display any imperfections, demanding formal perfection instead.
All these strong and empowering product characteristics present a stark contrast to the more doom-laden storyline featuring the current Doctor David Tennant as told in Doctor Who. The plot could be construed as a cautionary tale about the omnipotence of water. It explores the scarcity of water, the dangers of contamination and how far people, or in this case aliens, are prepared to go to get it. In the story the aliens take over the human bodies of the crew on the Mars base in order to leave the planet, fly back to Earth and colonise it. The attraction of planet Earth is its abundance of that very precious natural element - water.
